If you use high quality ingredients, smoothies can be one of the healthiest fast foods around. They can be blended in a hurry and make a quick and tasty breakfast or snack; children generally love them and they are easy to customize.

From a health perspective, however, a lot can also go wrong when you make a smoothie. If your smoothie contains nothing but frozen yogurt, juice, and a little fruit, it’s not terribly good for you.

Enter the green smoothie.

banana avocado smoothie

Green smoothies are usually made by adding leafy greens to a fruit smoothie. I make them every now and then, and do like them, but green smoothies aren’t necessarily for everyone.

This green smoothie, though, is a little different. It’s green because it’s made with avocado and a wonderful greens supplement called Midori Greens. If you are the type of person who can’t imagine adding kale to a smoothie, this greens powder might for you. It has a very mild taste, is vegan, gluten and sugar-free and I think it’s a really great product.

The incredibly generous iHerb has offered to give a $50 shopping spree plus a canister of Midori Greens to one of my readers. iHerb carries a huge amount of products, their prices are great, and they offer free shipping if you spend more than $40. It’s a great place to buy natural bath and beauty items, supplements, gluten-free baking supplies and more.

So go register at iHerb and leave a comment below letting me know that you did so in order to enter the giveaway.

For a second entry, follow me on twitter and leave me a comment letting me know you did (or let me know that you are already a twitter follower).

For a third entry, like Healthy Green Kitchen on Facebook, then leave me a comment letting me know that you do (again, if you are already a “liker”, just leave a comment telling me so).

This giveaway is only open to US residents and you must register at iHerb in order to be eligible to win. The giveaway closes Sunday (1/16/11) at midnight. I’ll select a winner using random.org and again, you’ll get a $50 shopping spree at iHerb plus a free canister of Midori Greens if you win. Good luck!

ps If you don’t win (or if you just can’t wait) and you’ve never shopped with iHerb before, you can use the code GAP735 to get $5 off your first order!

Some supermarkets sell pre-ripened avocados which have been treated with synthetic ethylene to hasten ripening. In some cases avocados can be left on the tree for several months, which is an advantage to commercial growers who seek the greatest return for their crop; but if the fruit remains unpicked for too long it falls to the ground.*..”"
