Happy New Year (plus a Black Eyes Peas recipe and my top 10 of 2010)

Happy New Year everyone!

2010 was pretty great, but I’m hoping 2011 will be even better. In order to ensure good luck in the coming year, I ate a great big bowl of black eyed peas this morning. This is a Southern US custom I’ve never followed before, but hey…there’s a first time for everything. I also learned recently that it’s bad luck to do laundry on New Year’s Day (a superstition that also originated in the American South, I believe), so my big ol’ pile will wait until tomorrow. If you know of anything else I should be doing to make sure 2011 is a terrific year, please share in the comments section :)

One of my goals for the coming year is to make sure my content lives up to the title of the blog, so look for many more nourishing whole foods recipes, as well as more focused content about holistic nutrition and green living in the months to come. Black Eyed Peas with Sweet Potatoes and Greens


  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 2 shallots peeled and chopped
  • *2 large organic carrots chopped
  • *1 medium organic sweet potato chopped
  • *2 cups chopped organic greens collards would be the most traditional choice as they symbolize prosperity; I used cabbage because it's what I had on hand
  • *2 cups dried black-eyed peas rinsed, picked over, and drained
  • *1 small ham hock preferable local/pastured- optional (this adds nice flavor to the beans, but you can certainly leave it out)
  • *5 cups vegetable chicken, or turkey stock, preferably homemade (or use water)
  • *sea salt and fresh ground pepper to taste
  • *crushed red pepper flakes or your favorite hot sauce- optional


  • 1. Heat olive oil in a medium soup pot. Add the shallots and cook for a minute or two over medium heat.
  • 2. Add the chopped carrots and sweet potato. Cook for a few minutes, stirring frequently, then add the greens.
  • 3. Add the black eyed peas and the water, bring to a boil, then reduce the heat to a simmer. Cook for 1.5-2 hours, adding more liquid if necessary, until the peas are very tender.
  • 4. Season to taste with salt and pepper, then add the optional crushed red pepper flakes or hot sauce before serving.

    Winnie, my resolution for this year is to develop my food photography skills which are now pretty much nil. Your photography is amazing. Do you mind my asking if you have any tips to share with me? what kind of camera and lens do you use? I have a good Dslr camera (canon) but my lenses and skills are better suited for outdoor pix of my kids and scenery. Food photography is just a whole new thing for me. Any tips or recommended reading? Thanks so much and have a great year.

    • Ok, Rivki…I am Jewish but know nothing about eating black eyed peas on Rosh Hashana! I will have to investigate that further…
      As far as the photography stuff goes, that could be a super long response. 1.5 years ago I was in your shoes. I had absolutely no background in photography before I started this blog. But I really wanted to learn, so got a canon rebel and spent a lot of the last year working on my photos. I am pleased with the results and really appreciate your sweet words. I am currently using a Nikon D3OO: sometimes with an 18-200mm lens and sometimes with a 50mm 1.4 macro lens. I upgraded my camera mostly bec. I got a great deal (1/2 price) on it… I think the canon rebel was great. When I had the canon, I used the 60mm macro lens all the time- loved that lens. I learned a lot from reading about food photography online and I do have a couple of books, but I learned mostly from practice. I can not say enough about becoming familiar with the manual settings of your camera, making sure you have good light, using a tripod, and getting a macro lens if you can. In answer to your question above, I’ve got one tip: black-eyed peas bring good luck for the new year, and collard greens bring prosperity, so you might want to get some of the latter too!
