Fair Trade Chocolate Sunflower Seed Butter Cups

A week ago, we were having typical fall weather and I was taking photos like this…

Over the weekend, however, we had a crazy snowstorm. Now everything looks like this…

It’s warmed up, so the snow is melting. It should be completely gone in a couple of days, and I won’t be sad if it does not come back for a while.

But my dogs and kids did had an absolute blast while it was here.

Yeah. We built Dylan a way to ski in the backyard. Don’t ask ;)

Anyhow, today is Halloween, and since I decided not to eat chocolate that’s not fair trade anymore (here’s why), I wanted an alternative to the mini Reese’s peanut butter cups I usually pilfer from my kids’ Halloween candy stash.

homemade reeses

Yes, it’s true. There are times when I eat things you might not expect me to. Like Swedish fish. And on Halloween, it’s always been mini peanut butter cups. I really enjoy them, and have always felt that if I eat a wholesome diet most all of the time, there’s room for 3-4 mini peanut butter cups every now and then.

But this year I am staying away from those Reese’s, and all other commercial chocolate that’s not fair trade. I’m going to have a few of these Fair Trade Chocolate Sunflower Seed Butter Cups instead.

I used these homemade chocolate peanut butter cups from Ashley English over at Design Sponge for inspiration, and mine didn’t come out as pretty as hers…but they’re tasty. I substituted organic sunflower seed butter for the peanut butter as I wanted to feature these on my blog without the nuts since so many people can’t eat them. But you can certainly use peanut butter if it works for you, or use almond butter or another nut or seed butter of your choice. I added in finely chopped, toasted sunflower seeds instead of using the graham crackers in Ashley’s recipe, so these are gluten-free, as well.

I used Green and Black’s fair-trade certified, organic dark 72% baking chocolate for the shells. I love the rich taste of this chocolate, and it melts like a dream. I think, though, that when I make them again, I will look for a fair-trade milk chocolate to make these more family friendly (my kids don’t love dark chocolate).

I don’t have time to write out the recipe (and I don’t think you need it since it’s so similar to Ashley’s) since I am on my way out the door with my kids to go to our town’s Halloween parade…I wish you a safe and happy Halloween!
